He graduated from high school at age 14, then spent a year in London, England, studying the teaching of speech with his grandfather. Upon returning to Edinburgh in 1863, he spent the next five years teaching music and elocution in a succession of private schools. Meanwhile, his father had developed Visible Speech, a method for teaching deaf people how to speak, and in 1868 Bell went to London to serve as his father’s assistant. Following an epidemic of tuberculosis that killed his two brothers and almost killed him, in 1870 he moved with his family to Brantford, Ontario, Canada.
Astor’s extensive property holdings in New York City formed the basis for the Astor family fortune, which increased substantially under the management of his son William and grandson John Jacob III. Astor died on March 29, 1848, in New York City.
