M. College. He was born in 1848 in Tennessee, somewhere between Nashville and Murfreesboro. The middle of three sons, he and one brother entered Fisk University at the same time during the fall of 1867 along with two young women. They became the first graduates of Fisk in 1875. Burrus's motivation to go to school came from an alleged statement made by John C. " This was the challenge that led them to success. They proved that a black person could easily solve a problem in mathematics and conjugate a Greek verb.

He was not college trained, and his administrative style did not gain faculty support. He was not viewed as being of presidential quality, and the faculty felt that he had become president through favoritism rather than qualification. Faculty unrest resulted in the board of trustees releasing the entire faculty charging the president to hire a completely new staff. The board began to think highly of Alcorn's industrial education program (though there was evidence of previous success) and put more funds into it.

When the Democrats took control of state government that year, he was reinstated as Alcorn's president. It was under his leadership that, in 1878, the state legislature reorganized the institution, changing its name to Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College in order to conform to the requirements mandated in the 1862 federal Morrill Land-Grant Act. " This reorganization enabled the school to become officially the first college for black people established under the 1862 federal legislation, an achievement that became known beyond the state's boundaries.
