Education has made such a difference in my life that it just, you know, I could just see that I could make a difference there. I went in as a provisional student because I came from an unaccredited high school. Then they tested me, and I placed out of a lot of stuff. It was a very small college, about eight hundred students, and some of the instructors took a real interest in me. I got scholarships and things, so that really, really helped a lot and I think really influenced me. Belief in Students 33 I had two business instructors who were just wonderful, and I had, well he was the dean of the College of Business.
So he had dropped out for a while. He was probably a twenty-five-year-old college graduate. I was working at a university in Ohio, and Linda was a maintenance worker in our building. She was an African American woman about nineteen years old with two children. I worked late, and she would always come in and clean the office and empty trash cans while we talked. She’d talk about how much she wanted to go to college, how she just enjoyed being on a college campus and wished she could become a student.
The best I could expect was the 6thgrade level, and there was a large contingency who was reading somewhere between the 3rd- and 4th-grade level which is just about the difference between sight vocabulary and phonics. So these students didn’t know their phonics well. That coupled with social promotion, I felt, was doing these students a terrible, terrible disservice. Education is supposed to be the great equalizer, yet we sometimes provide no books, no homework expectations, and no consequences.
